Kingston University hosted the Young Reporter Scheme winners’ day on Saturday 18 May.
Twenty of the thirty three winners attended and experienced the realities of working in a newsroom.
It was an amazing but hard working day and those that came along were our top students this year, having beaten hundreds of other students who started the programme in September 2023.
The University has hosted the event for many years and arrange for their third year students to guide the Young Reporters throughout the day.
Everything is set up to replicate a newsroom and the Young Reporter winners are split up into teams and given the task of arranging layouts for the sixteen page publication, which will be displayed on all of Newsquest’s online newspapers.
Rishmita De, one of the Young Reporters, said: “The day at Kingston university was eye-opening and I learnt about many different aspects to do with journalism. It was fun and the people were great.”
Yusuph Choudhury added: “It was an amazing day and a great way to round off a year of hard journalism."
During the day the Young Reporters mingled with other students from different schools and friendships were formed as they went about the various tasks set. To see the students in action go to tiktok.com/@youngreporterschemeuk
Ana Galvani-Silva, one of our other winning reporters, said: "I really enjoyed the experience day at Kingston University as it was incredible to be able to work in a real newsroom. I also loved getting to know new people who all share the same passion for journalism as I do and work together to create a newspaper full of really interesting articles written by other young reporters. I learnt so much and I am very grateful to have had this opportunity.”
Aishwarya Kajendra summed up her experience by adding: "I really enjoyed the experience being in a real newsroom environment and I made great friends and memories."
As the scheme winds down for another year, recruitment has already begun for September 2023, when we look forwarding to welcoming our next cohort of students.
