Last few days to sign up for Young Reporter

Top Reporters for 2019/20 - Josh Bartholomew from Hampton School and Nicholas James from Wilson's School

This week is the final week for signing up for the Young Reporter Scheme this year. Student names have to be sent across by Friday 13 November and pupils committing to do this, have to be prepared to catch up and get their articles written and uploaded onto the online newspapers by the end of the month. It is a challenge, but such a great opportunity for those who are keen to experience life in the media.

Over the years, the scheme has gained an amazing reputation and every year more and more schools join the scheme. It not only gives students the chance to write for a real live news platform but to gain an understanding of working in the media, battling with deadlines, word counts and the day to day pressures of this industry.

Although originally created for students interested in journalism, because of its versality and the benefits it offers, Newsquest have found that it attracts students who are considering all types of careers, because as one teacher said, ‘deadlines set in stone relate to every industry’.

Tessa Bartholomew, Assistant Head of English at Hampton School, said: “My message to teachers and parents is to encourage your pupils, sons and daughters to join the Young Reporter scheme. The skills and experience your young people will gain are invaluable, regardless of whether they want to pursue a career in journalism.”

This is an opportunity not to be missed and schools wishing to join, need to make contact as soon as possible to avoid missing this incredible extra-curricular activity.
